Megaupload.com – an example of how (not) to architect your cloud storage

The shutdown of Megaupload.com is a stark reminder to users who use cloud storage providers to host their content. Just because you have faith in the cloud provider’s infrastructure does not mean you should through architecture out the window. Some points to consider:

  • Your disaster recovery plans should include what steps to take if your cloud provider is shut down because of alleged criminal activities
  • You should have back up of your content at your location or with another storage provider in case of scenarios like Megaupload.com
  • Do a background check on your cloud Storage provider. If there is a history of illegal activities it makes sense to stay clear.
  • Know the laws of the country where your cloud storage provider resides.

Bottom line: You cloud storage provide may provide the functional requirements you need; however don’t forget about the non-functional requirements as well.
